DanTommi (Dan Tommi Hildén) is an artist based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Trained as a sculptor, his practice moves between physical, digital and virtual forms, bringing a material and sculptural way of thinking into computational space.
He holds a Master of Arts from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now Aalto University), where he specialised in sculpture. His engagement with digital technologies dates back to 1988, when he began working as a graphic artist at YLE, using Quantel systems including Paintbox, Harriet and HAL.
His current practice explores what happens when sculptural form moves between physical and computational states. Forms may begin in clay, become digitised through scanning or photogrammetry, exist as data, point clouds or virtual objects, respond to external systems, and return again to physical space.
Rather than treating the physical and digital as separate worlds, DanTommi approaches them as a continuum through which form can transform. Central to his practice is an interest in materiality, plasticity and becoming: the physical plasticity of clay finds a parallel in computational space, where form can respond to data and changing conditions.
The digital is therefore not simply a tool for representing physical objects, but a material and spatial condition in its own right — one through which sculpture can become fluid, relational and continuously changing.
Alongside his artistic practice, DanTommi is Senior Lecturer at HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design, University of Gothenburg.
